How is STEP different from other nonprofits?

Our support goes beyond emergency relief and handing out essential supplies. Families work one-on-one with certified financial social workers to build long-term financial wellness.

We stop the loss of critical basic needs (like housing, utilities, or transportation) with emergency funds - not loans -  families don’t pay back a dime
Families receive personalized guidance to shift behaviors and build a stronger financial future
90% of families continue to reach their financial goals even a year after completing the program
Our goal? That you leave us stronger - without ever needing to come back
Who does STEP serve?

Our financial counseling, personalized finance plans, and support programs are open to all military and Veteran families - regardless of rank or separation date.

Emergency financial support is available to:

Active duty service members in pay grades E1–E6
Veterans within 18 months of separation
What services does STEP offer besides the Financial Wellness Program?

STEP offers support programs designed to offset expenses, provide essential resources, and connect families to our long-term solutions.

Monthly distributions of groceries and essentials
Cammies to College – an educational resource fair for military families
Holiday programs like Sharing the Joy and our Thanksgiving distribution
Where does STEP operate?

We’re headquartered in San Diego and guarantee service for families across California, Washington, and Oregon officially - but we have served families across 47 states and counting. We are expanding nationally over the next decade and will continue to add more states to our guaranteed service areas.

How can I stay updated on your work?

Do I qualify for emergency funds?

Emergency funds (grants - not loans) are available to E1–E6 service members and Veterans within 18 months of separation who are facing the loss of a critical basic need such as housing, transportation, or utilities.

How do I apply? Can I apply if I'm a spouse?

Click any “Apply for Help” button to start your application. You’ll be asked to upload basic documentation, like your LES, but everything should be easy to access.

If you're a military or Veteran spouse, use your spouse’s info for the applicant section, and your own for the spouse section
Service members do not need to be present or in the country - our process is designed to support families even during deployment
If a question doesn’t apply to you, just enter a “0”
Trouble uploading a document? Email it to info@teamstepusa.org with your full name and note that you submitted an application
Note: The application won’t work on military computers
Are any family members eligible to apply?

Only service members, veterans, and their spouses are eligible to apply for the program.

Are the emergency funds a loan? Do I have to pay it back?

No - STEP provides direct payments to third-party vendors (like landlords, automotive companies, utility companies, etc.), and there’s no repayment.

What does the financial counseling involve?

You’ll work one-on-one with a certified financial social worker to create a customized finance plan based on your situation and goals.

Get personalized, solution-focused guidance rooted in your real-life challenges
Learn practical financial tools and education that actually make sense for you
Build a path forward that breaks the cycle of stress -and supports the life you want
How long does it take to receive help?

Once you submit your application, a social worker will be assigned within 3–5 business days (usually 3).

Facing an urgent situation like a 3-day pay or quit notice? Upload it with your application so we can expedite your case
Our process is designed to move quickly in emergencies and give you long-term support to move forward
Can STEP help with things like credit cards or payday loans?

We don’t pay off unsecured debts or offer loans, but our social workers are very good at helping create a plan to manage and reduce debt.

What if I’m not in a full-blown crisis, but I'm still struggling or just want to plan for the future?

You don’t have to be in crisis to apply. If you’re a military or Veteran family looking to improve your financial wellness, we encourage you to start the process.

Apply even if you're just feeling overwhelmed or want to get ahead
Work with a social worker to build a personalized plan
Strengthen financial behaviors and reduce stress before it escalates
What if I’ve received help before? Can I apply again?

Most families only need our help once. However, we evaluate on a case-by-case basis. Only 3% of clients ever return for additional support.
